Ford Asks Some EV Customers to Stop Using Tesla NACS Adapters
In a groundbreaking move, Ford previously allowed its electric vehicle (EV) owners to use adapters to access Tesla's Supercharger network. However, the company has now issued an urgent request for EV owners to stop using these adapters immediately.

Ford announced that it has identified unspecified "potential issues" with the adapters, which could lead to reduced charging speeds or, in some cases, damage to the charging port itself. The exact nature of these problems has not been disclosed, and there have been no reports of similar issues with adapters from Rivian or General Motors, which also enable vehicles to charge using Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug. A Ford spokesperson noted, “Over time, continued use may lead to reduced charging speeds.”

To address the issue, Ford stated, "We do not recommend using the initially provided adapters on any vehicles from this point forward, and we will send you replacements." The company emphasized that it must receive all affected adapters back to mitigate the risk of potential vehicle damage and confirmed that it will provide replacement adapters free of charge.
Numerous Ford owners took to social media to share that they received this notification today.

The problem appears to have arisen recently. Earlier this week, an InsideEVs writer encountered issues while charging a test Ford Mustang Mach-E with the adapter, observing a flashing red light on the charging port and an inability to select the plug through the Tesla app.

A Ford spokesperson confirmed that a recent batch of NACS adapters is affected, and the replacement will be classified as a customer service action rather than a recall. Here’s the company's statement:

"Ford has discovered that a batch of adapters sent earlier this year has potential issues that may lead to reduced charging speeds over time. Ford does not recommend using the identified adapters."

Replacement adapters are expected to begin shipping the week of October 28, allowing customers time to verify or update their addresses. Retail customers are asked to check their current addresses in their FordPass accounts. If the address is correct, no further action is needed; if it requires updating, customers must do so by October 24. Fleet customers will be notified and asked to confirm their addresses directly with their national account managers.

In contrast, officials from General Motors and Rivian have stated that their Tesla NACS adapters have not experienced any such problems. A Rivian spokesperson confirmed, “Rivian will not be affected by this issue, and Rivian drivers can continue to use their NACS adapters normally.”

For our customers using the NACS to CCS1 adapters, we continue to offer a one-year warranty. If you encounter any issues during use, we will assist you in resolving them, including unconditional replacements.
