Octopus Charge Brings 200,000+ EV Chargers Into One App — But Can It Really Simplify Public Charging?
Public EV charging is expanding quickly across North America, but for many electric vehicle drivers, finding a charger is only part of the challenge. Different charging networks often require different apps, accounts, payment methods, and authentication processes.
A new platform called Octopus Charge aims to simplify that experience by bringing more than 200,000 EV charging points into a single smartphone app.
The idea is straightforward: instead of switching between multiple charging-network apps during a road trip, EV drivers can use one platform to locate compatible chargers, check availability, review pricing, and pay for charging sessions.
It is an important step toward a more connected EV charging ecosystem. However, it does not completely eliminate the fragmentation of North American public charging—at least not yet.
What Is Octopus Charge?
Octopus Charge is a public EV charging platform launched in North America by Octopus Energy US. It follows the model of Octopus Energy’s European Electroverse platform, which has expanded to more than one million public charging points across more than 40 countries.
Recent reports indicate that Octopus Charge provides access to more than 210,000 chargers across approximately two dozen partner charging networks in the United States and Canada.
Participating networks reportedly include well-known operators such as:
ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, bp pulse, Shell Recharge, FLO, Circle K, EV Connect.
Instead of creating and managing separate accounts for every supported charging operator, drivers can use Octopus Charge as a centralized interface.
The platform allows users to search for charging stations and filter them according to factors such as charging speed, connector type, location, and network.

Why a Unified EV Charging App Matters
The number of public EV chargers is growing rapidly, but network fragmentation remains a genuine usability problem.
A driver may have plenty of charging stations along a route yet still need several different apps to access them. Each charging operator may have its own registration process, payment system, pricing structure, and user interface.
That means the future of EV charging isn’t simply about installing more chargers. It is also about making those chargers easier to discover, authenticate, access, and pay for.
More Than 200,000 Chargers Through One Account
Scale is one of the biggest attractions of Octopus Charge.
The original launch coverage described more than 200,000 chargers, while subsequent reporting has placed the figure above 210,000 chargers.
That is significant when compared with the rapidly expanding overall U.S. charging infrastructure.
For drivers, however, having hundreds of thousands of chargers available nationally does not automatically create a seamless charging experience. Access and interoperability matter just as much as raw charger numbers.
One Payment Method Across Multiple Charging Networks
Another important feature is consolidated payment.
For supported networks, EV drivers can add a payment method to Octopus Charge and use it for charging sessions without repeatedly setting up payment details with individual charging providers.
According to reports about the launch, Octopus Charge passes through the charging operator’s original energy price rather than adding a markup to the energy cost.
For example, if a participating charging station lists electricity at $0.50 per kWh, Octopus says the same underlying energy price is shown through Octopus Charge.
For frequent public-charging users and EV road trippers, simplifying payment could be just as useful as simplifying charger discovery.
Real-Time Charger Information Helps Drivers Plan Better
A useful EV charging app needs to provide more than pins on a map.
Octopus Charge provides information such as:
- Charger location
- Real-time availability
- Charging speed
- Connector compatibility
- Charging price
- Nearby amenities
Drivers can also enter information about their EV so the platform can help identify suitable charging options.
This becomes particularly useful on longer journeys. Rather than arriving at a station only to discover that the connector is incompatible or that the available charger is slower than expected, drivers can make a more informed decision before leaving their route.

The Big Limitation: It Still Doesn’t Cover Every Major Charging Network
Despite its large footprint, Octopus Charge does not currently provide universal access to every major North American charging network.
At launch, notable omissions reported by EV media included:
- Tesla Supercharger
- Electrify America
- IONNA
This is an important limitation.
A driver taking a long-distance trip may therefore still need another network’s app, a vehicle manufacturer’s charging interface, or another supported payment method to access stations outside the Octopus Charge ecosystem.
In other words, Octopus Charge can potentially reduce app fragmentation, but it cannot yet eliminate it.
That distinction matters because North American charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly diverse. A genuinely universal charging experience will require not only aggregating charging locations but also greater interoperability between vehicles, charging hardware, networks, authentication systems, and payment platforms.
Interoperability Could Be the Bigger EV Charging Story
The significance of Octopus Charge goes beyond one app.
It represents a broader transition toward EV charging interoperability.
The ideal public charging experience is ultimately simple: arrive, connect the vehicle, charge, and pay without worrying about which company operates the station.
EVPKI is particularly interesting because it supports universal Plug & Charge, where compatible vehicles and chargers can automatically authenticate a charging session without requiring the driver to complete a separate payment or authorization process every time.
Public EV Charging Is Only Going to Get Bigger
The need for simpler charging access will become increasingly important as EV adoption grows.
NREL’s national charging analysis estimated that supporting approximately 33 million light-duty EVs in the United States by 2030 could require more than 28 million charging ports, including home, workplace, and public infrastructure.
Within that scenario, roughly 1.2 million public charging ports would be needed.
NREL estimated cumulative charging-infrastructure investment of approximately $53 billion to $127 billion to support that scale of electrification.
Those numbers illustrate why software interoperability matters.
Building millions of chargers is one challenge. Making them function as a coherent network that ordinary drivers can use without understanding the technical relationships between dozens of charging companies is another.
What Does Octopus Charge Mean for EV Drivers?
Octopus Charge addresses one of the least glamorous but most persistent problems with public EV charging: complexity.
Instead of asking drivers to understand which company owns each charging station and maintain an account for every network, aggregation platforms can put much of that complexity behind a single interface.
For drivers, the potential benefits are clear:
Fewer apps. One account can provide access to multiple participating networks.
Simpler payments. A stored payment method can be used across supported charging operators.
Better route decisions. Availability, charging speed, compatibility, and pricing information can help drivers choose appropriate stations before arriving.
More transparent charging. Seeing charging options and pricing in one place makes it easier to compare stations.
But drivers should still maintain a backup plan. Because some major networks are not yet included, no single app should currently be treated as guaranteed access to every public charger in North America.
