Volvo and Polestar Owners Can Now Access Tesla V3 Superchargers with New Adapter
Good news for Swedish electric vehicle enthusiasts: Over 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations across the United States and Canada are now open for Volvo and Polestar drivers.

If you own an electric Polestar or Volvo and have envied Tesla owners enjoying a seamless charging experience, your wait is over. Today, these two European brands, both subsidiaries of Geely Group, announced that their electric vehicles will be able to charge at more than 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations in the U.S. and Canada. Following the automotive industry's shift towards Tesla's fast-charging network and plug standards, these manufacturers will provide adapters for their electric vehicle owners, with plans for future models to feature Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug at launch.

Volvo stated that customers purchasing the 2025 Volvo EX90, EX40, or EC40 (formerly known as the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge) will receive a complimentary Tesla adapter. Existing owners can order the adapter from dealerships starting today, priced at $230 (or CAD 310). The adapters will begin shipping to retailers on November 18. Volvo also mentioned that the EX30's adapter details will be announced later, as this model is currently only sold in Canada due to tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles in the U.S.

Polestar is offering a similar arrangement. The automaker confirmed in a press release that existing Polestar vehicle owners can order the NACS adapter through their local Polestar service points, with delivery expected in mid-November. Moreover, Polestar's Google Maps integration will be updated to display all available NACS chargers. This means that Polestar 2 sedans, the new Polestar 3 crossover, and the upcoming Polestar 4 will easily utilize Tesla's extensive and industry-standard charging infrastructure. A Polestar representative confirmed that these adapters will also cost $230 in the U.S.

Both brands are set to launch more electric vehicle models that will utilize Tesla's plug standard from the outset. Ford began this migration in 2023 by reaching an agreement with Tesla to initially provide adapters, followed by the introduction of native NACS plugs (now technically the SAE J3400 standard) in the coming years. This transition comes amid widespread disappointment in the automotive industry regarding the reliability and compatibility of various electric vehicle charging networks.

For Tesla, this isn’t a challenge; the company has spent over a decade building the world’s largest fast-charging network, effectively managing all software and components in-house.

However, the transition hasn't been without its hiccups. Both Ford and General Motors faced delays with their adapters, with Ford recently recalling a batch due to performance issues and potential device damage from prolonged use. Fortunately, the process appears to be going more smoothly for Volvo and Polestar electric vehicle owners.
