London's Iconic Black Taxis to Go Zero-Emission with Extended Plug-In Taxi Grant
London's iconic black taxis are set to transition towards zero-emission vehicles following the UK government's approval to extend the plug-in taxi grant, a move welcomed by FREENOW.

After achieving widespread success, the UK government announced the extension of the plug-in taxi grant until April 2025.

Since its introduction in 2017, the plug-in taxi grant has provided over £50 million to support the purchase of more than 9,000 zero-emission taxis, leading to over 54% of licensed taxis in London becoming electric.

London's black electric taxis offer a clean mobility solution, aiming to reduce air pollution in a city historically associated with smog. Steve McNamara, Secretary General of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association, hopes that this initiative will contribute to reducing air pollution.

London Electric Vehicle Company's Managing Director, Chris Allen, agrees with the announcement, stating that it sends a positive signal to the taxi industry and its customers, indicating the government's commitment to supporting the electrification of its iconic sector.
Mariusz Zabrocki, General Manager of FREENOW UK, expresses great pleasure at this news. He emphasizes the importance of targeted support for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, especially among taxi drivers facing challenges such as high energy costs and limited access to charging infrastructure.

FREENOW continues to advocate for reducing VAT on roadside charging points to 5% to make them more accessible and affordable for drivers, in line with the rate applicable to home charging. Zabrocki believes that providing higher income, financial support, and unique third-party partnerships will further encourage drivers to transition to electric vehicles across the UK.

However, Zabrocki stresses the need for more public support and private sector collaboration to ensure investments are made where they are most needed, especially for taxi driver communities.

The adoption of electric vehicles drives cities towards sustainability, promoting cleaner air and reducing emissions, paving the way for a greener future.
