One BYD Owner’s Story
“After the storm cut our power, we panicked briefly before realizing we could use our Atto 3’s battery to run the fridge, lights, and home office for three days,” shared a Brisbane resident.
Another BYD owner added: “We ran an extension cord to our neighbor’s house – powering both their fridge and our two fridges! I love my BYD even more now.”
MG Owners Step Up
An MG4 51 Excite owner reported: “We’ve relied entirely on our car for 36 hours.” He detailed: “We used it not just for refrigeration but also the kettle and coffee maker – crucial comforts in cold, stormy conditions. Daily consumption was about 10% of the battery. A full charge could sustain basic needs for a week. This beats scrambling for diesel generators!”
Grassroots Relief Efforts
Auto service company MyCar has mobilized a volunteer network called “The Chargers”, dispatching V2L-enabled EVs to blackout zones. A spokesperson confirmed plans to deploy vehicles to cyclone-affected households in Queensland this month.
Tesla’s Limitations and Workarounds
Tesla owners face challenges due to unidirectional onboard chargers (OBCs). While Elon Musk prioritizes cost reduction over V2L integration, Chinese-made DC-to-AC external dischargers (7kW output) offer a solution by converting power via Supercharger ports. These devices, widely used in China for camping, could theoretically enable Teslas to power fridges and phones during 2-3 day outages.
