Accelerating Growth of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in Australia

Australia is witnessing a remarkable surge in the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, driven by a commitment to encourage the adoption of low-emission transportation methods. The latest report reveals that following a record-breaking growth over the past 12 months, Australia is poised to double its electric vehicle charging station count in 2024, with an additional 900 stations set to be installed.

Analysis by Next System
According to an analysis by consultancy firm Next System, the number of car charging stations in Australia witnessed a remarkable 90% increase in 2023. The report focuses on the expansion of the public fast-charging network, highlighting the addition of 397 new car charging stations and 755 charging points during 2023, with expectations of further substantial growth in 2024.

Insights and Concerns
The survey findings come at a time of record-breaking electric car sales in Australia, albeit with concerns among potential buyers regarding the adequacy of the charging network. Founder of Next System, Blakeley, notes that Australia plans to establish charging stations at an additional 470 sites, expecting to add 900 new stations this year. This signals an acceleration in the growth of Australia's public EV fast-charging network after a slow start.

Key Market Players
Despite Tesla's dominance in electric vehicle sales, local companies like Chargefox lead the market share in charging stations, operating over a third of the stations, followed by Evie Networks with 23%. Tesla holds only 10% of the market share, followed by Jolt and NRMA. Traditional gasoline retailers like BP and Ampol are also increasing their presence in the electric vehicle charging market.

Tesla's Contribution
Although Tesla holds a smaller market share, its supercharging network provides the most electricity, occupying nearly half of Australia's charging network capacity.

Consumer Trends
In 2023, Australians purchased over 87,000 electric vehicles, representing over 7% of all new car sales, more than doubling the sales volume from 2022. A survey by Pureprofile conducted at the end of last year highlighted the availability of public charging stations as one of the top concerns for drivers considering electric vehicle purchases, second only to purchase price.

The accelerated growth of electric vehicle charging stations in Australia underscores the country's commitment to sustainable transportation. With the increasing accessibility and convenience of charging infrastructure, coupled with rising consumer interest and government support, Australia's electric vehicle market is poised for further expansion.
