2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Charging Performance with Tesla’s NACS Connector
The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 continues to push boundaries in electric vehicle (EV) technology, and now it’s tapping into Tesla’s Supercharger network with the newly adopted North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. Known for its remarkable efficiency, style, and technology, the Ioniq 5 is even better positioned for the fast-charging future—despite the challenges of integrating an 800V charging system with Tesla’s 400V network.

The Fast-Charging Edge of the Hyundai Ioniq 5
One of the biggest perks of the Ioniq 5 is its fast-charging capability. Thanks to Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes using a powerful 350kW DC charger. In contrast, the new Tesla-compatible NACS charging option on the 2025 model now allows drivers to tap into Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. Although this means slightly different peak charging speeds, it offers more convenient access to rapid charging for drivers across the U.S.

How Fast Will the Ioniq 5 Charge at Tesla Superchargers?
When connected to a Tesla V3 Supercharger, the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will achieve peak charging speeds of up to 135kW. For Ioniq 5 models with the smaller 63 kWh battery, this translates to a 10% to 80% charge in around 24 minutes. Models with larger batteries will charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes—very comparable to Tesla’s own Model Y charging time on the same network.
However, if drivers use a CCS adapter to access a 350kW charger (such as those provided by Electrify America), the Ioniq 5 can reach up to 257kW, maintaining Hyundai’s famous fast-charging times. For those needing even faster charging, the CCS option remains the best choice.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5

63 kW

84 kW
DC Fast Charge(10-80%) Tesla NACS Supercharger 24 Mins 30 Mins
50 kW DC fast charging station with CCS adapter 1 h 1 h 20 Mins
DC fast charging stations from 250 kW with CCS adapter 20 Mins 22 Mins
AC 2 level charging (10-80%) 5 h 40 Mins 7 h 20 Mins

Hyundai Engineers Overcome Voltage Challenges
The Ioniq 5 uses an advanced 800V architecture—an upgrade that offers faster charging and improved efficiency over the more common 400V systems in many EVs. However, Tesla Superchargers are primarily designed for 400V vehicles. Hyundai engineers faced the challenge of maintaining optimal charging speeds while using a lower-voltage charging source. They successfully optimized the vehicle’s compatibility to allow impressive performance on Tesla’s chargers, although not quite at the speed achieved with 350kW CCS chargers.

Tesla NACS Plug Benefits for Ioniq 5 Owners
The addition of Tesla’s NACS plug on the 2025 Ioniq 5 offers clear benefits:
    1. Expanded Charging Options: Access to Tesla’s vast Supercharger network, which brings more flexibility to EV road trips.
    2. Faster Charging for Legacy Ioniq 5 Models: Existing Ioniq 5 owners will soon be able to purchase NACS adapters to access Tesla Superchargers.
    3. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Capability: The Ioniq 5’s bidirectional charging feature is compatible with the new plug, enabling it to power devices and even small homes if needed.

What’s Next for Hyundai and Tesla Compatibility?
Hyundai’s commitment to making the NACS adapter available for earlier Ioniq 5 models by early 2025 signals its dedication to seamless charging integration. Moreover, Hyundai is also developing a “Plug & Charge” feature to streamline charging payments via Tesla’s network—currently in progress for future software updates.

Final Thoughts: A Powerful EV Charging Experience with More Options
The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, equipped with the NACS connector, is set to maintain its place as one of the most versatile and fast-charging electric vehicles available. While charging at Tesla’s Superchargers may not achieve the 350kW speeds possible with CCS adapters, the expanded access to Tesla’s network offers unparalleled convenience, especially for cross-country travel.
