How 8 Auto Giants Are Electrifying North America's Charging Infrastructure
North America’s electric vehicle (EV) adoption faces a critical roadblock: unreliable public charging. With 1 in 5 charging attempts failing due to broken or offline stations (J.D. Power, 2024), eight automotive titans—BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota—have united under IONNA, a groundbreaking charging network poised to challenge Tesla’s dominance.
On February 4, 2025, IONNA inaugurated its first flagship charging hub in Apex, North Carolina, marking the transition from pilot testing to nationwide deployment. Backed by equal investments from its automaker founders, this $1B+ joint venture aims to install 1,000+ chargers by 2025 and 30,000+ by 2030, creating the largest non-Tesla fast-charging network in the U.S.

Why IONNA Matters

1. Breaking Tesla’s Monopoly

Tesla currently controls ~66% of U.S. fast chargers. IONNA’s CCS/NACS-compatible stations (400kW, 800V+) will empower all EVs, reducing reliance on Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Strategic alignment with federal/state funding accelerates infrastructure growth.

2. Luxury Meets Innovation

AI-Powered Convenience: Starting Q1 2025, IONNA hubs will feature Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” tech for 24/7 contactless retail.

Premium Amenities: Weather-protected stalls, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and pet-friendly services redefine the charging experience.

3. Interoperability at Scale

Tested across 80 EV models (4,400+ sessions, 63MWh delivered), IONNA’s Plug&Charge tech eliminates app dependency.

Future integrations include AI-driven route optimization and in-vehicle payments.

Behind the Scenes: A Rare Alliance

“We’re fierce competitors, but we share a common goal: fixing charging for our customers,” says Orth Hedrick (Kia). Stellantis’ Chad Doyle adds, “Egos stay at the door—everyone brings unique value.”

Mercedes’ Nico Dettmer, a veteran of Europe’s IONITY network, emphasizes urgency: “North America needs more chargers, period.” Honda’s Jay Joseph echoes this, citing stalled partnerships before IONNA’s collaborative model unlocked progress.

The Road Ahead

2025 Milestones: 100+ sites launching nationwide, prioritizing highway corridors and urban hubs.

2030 Vision: 30,000 chargers supporting 90+ EV models from partner brands.

Cost Efficiency: Leveraging automaker R&D and federal grants to offset deployment costs.
